Assam Leads Adoption of New Indian Penal Code, Signals Safer Streets
The latest figures released by the central Home Ministry show Assam at the forefront of the BNS implementation drive. The chief minister said the achievement reflects the state’s commitment to a secure environment and efficient justice delivery. The BNS, effective from 1 July 2024, replaces the Indian Penal Code and is one of three new criminal statutes introduced to overhaul India’s justice system. Alongside the Indian Citizens Security Code and the Indian Evidence Act, the reforms focus on updating procedural norms, encouraging the use of forensic technology and shortening case timelines. Sarma’s statement came as the state celebrates the Durga Puja festivities, seeking divine blessings for continued vigilance.
