Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Friday that his government is enforcing a strict zero-tolerance stance on illegal land encroachments. The initiative aims to retrieve state and forest properties while uprooting the web of criminality that thrived unchecked in prior regimes.
Sarma took to social media to underscore the severity of the issue. Protected forests had morphed into dens of illegal operations, endangering the environment, public safety, and the state’s growth trajectory. ‘Our administration is committed to overturning years of inaction,’ he affirmed.
Eviction campaigns sweeping through various districts are integral to broader efforts for a secure Assam. Beyond land recovery, these actions safeguard forests, biodiversity, and ecological harmony—essentials for the region’s future.
Sarma expanded on the strategy: the government is targeting the very foundations of crime. ‘Illegal colonies frequently harbor organized syndicates involved in trafficking and other illicit trades that jeopardize citizen welfare,’ he warned.
Over the past few months, intensified drives have liberated vast tracts of land from sanctuaries and public domains. This comprehensive offensive marks a pivotal shift, promising long-term benefits for law enforcement, conservation, and development in Assam.
