Assam Government Vows Zero Tolerance as Minister Blames Opposition for Criticising Police
In the Assam Legislative Assembly on July 28, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Piyush Hazarika defended the government’s hard‑line policing policy and warned the opposition against undermining police initiatives. He stressed that effective law enforcement must be allowed to pursue aggressive action against all categories of criminals, including emerging cyber threats.
Hazarika lashed out at opposition legislators for simultaneously demanding tougher anti‑crime measures while questioning police operations targeting accused individuals. “The opposition wants strict action on one side but raises objections when the police act on the other,” he said.
Citing recent incidents where offenders assaulted officers during raids and managed to escape custody, the minister argued that a firmer police posture is essential for tackling serious crimes. “Many criminals have attacked police and fled. This compels us to enforce a stricter approach,” he explained.
He reiterated the state’s commitment to protecting the public and pledged continued full backing for police in their fight against organized crime. Highlighting the growing menace of cyber crime, Hazarika announced that the Assam government will adopt an equally stringent stance against digital offenders, who are responsible for surging cases of online fraud and financial scams affecting residents.
“The same rigor applied to drug traffickers must be extended to cyber criminals,” he affirmed, underscoring the administration’s zero‑tolerance policy that has already driven multiple operations against drug syndicates, illegal activities, and financial fraud across the state.
