Assam’s 2026‑27 Fiscal Plan Emphasises Renewable Energy and Agricultural Irrigation
The 2026‑27 state budget presented in Guwahati outlines a decisive shift toward clean power and enhanced farm productivity. A massive INR 72,000 crore infusion is slated for renewable and conventional energy projects, including solar parks, hydroelectric dams, thermal plants and large‑scale battery storage, aiming to secure a resilient electricity grid for the future.
Agriculture receives a dedicated INR 4,000 crore for irrigation infrastructure within the Brahmaputra valley, targeting an expansion of irrigated land area and an uplift in crop yields. The budget also reaffirms the continuation of social protection programmes such as Arunodaya and Nizut Moina without interruption.
Employment generation remains a cornerstone, with a target of two lakh new government jobs. The aviation sector will see the upgrade of Guwahati Airport to a capacity of 80 million passengers per annum, positioning Assam as a pivotal air gateway.
Healthcare staffing will increase by 33,000 positions, strengthening district hospitals, while higher‑education institutions will continue to recruit teachers to address chronic shortages. Skill‑development initiatives will train young people in artificial intelligence, visual effects and foreign languages—English, Japanese and Korean—to broaden their career horizons.
Infrastructure development covering roads, bridges, railways and air connectivity is set for fast‑track implementation. Additionally, Dibrugarh is slated to become the state’s second capital, improving administrative accessibility in Upper Assam.
Overall, the budget is framed as a balanced blend of job creation, infrastructure expansion, clean‑energy investment and sustained social welfare.
