Assam Chief Thanks Centre for Support as Floods Swamp 25 Districts

Assam’s Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to the Union government for its swift response to the catastrophic floods that have plagued the state this monsoon. In a social media posting, Sarma highlighted the unprecedented cloudburst that caused rainfall levels to surge up to 436 percent above the seasonal average, flooding areas that had never experienced such deluges before.

According to the chief minister, more than 1.8 million people across 25 districts and over 1,800 villages have been impacted, with 41 confirmed deaths and thousands of livestock lost. He lauded the coordinated efforts of the Indian Air Force, the National Disaster Response Force, and the State Disaster Response Force, which have been conducting 24‑hour rescue missions using helicopters and boats.

Sarma noted that the state has established 148 relief camps, providing shelter to roughly 30,000 internally displaced persons. Relief supplies, including over 300,000 kilograms of rice, drinking water and medical kits, have been distributed to the hardest‑hit districts.

The chief minister reaffirmed his commitment to working closely with the centre to formulate a comprehensive rehabilitation package that addresses both immediate relief and long‑term reconstruction. He also announced that discussions will commence with neighboring states to strengthen regional coordination for future cloudburst and flood events.

The ongoing collaboration between the state and central governments reflects a shared resolve to mitigate the disaster’s impact and to rebuild communities swiftly and sustainably.
