Andhra Pradesh Foundation Day: Greetings and State History
Amaravati, November 1: As Andhra Pradesh celebrates its Foundation Day, political leaders across the country have conveyed their good wishes to residents of the state. The day is marked every year on November 1 and serves as a reminder of the long road to statehood.
The creation of Andhra Pradesh happened in two distinct steps. On October 1, 1953, Telugu-speaking districts were carved out of Madras State to form the 'Andhra State', which had Kurnool as its capital. This came after the famous fast unto death and supreme sacrifice made by Potti Sriramulu.
On November 1, 1956, the Telugu-speaking regions of the Andhra State and Hyderabad State were brought together, reorganising Andhra Pradesh along linguistic lines. Hyderabad was declared the capital of the new state.
After several decades, on June 2, 2014, Andhra Pradesh was split, and Telangana emerged as a new state.
Union Minister Manohar Lal shared greetings for Andhra Pradesh along with several other states in a post on X. Praising their cultural and historical richness, he highlighted Andhra Pradesh's glorious traditions, Karnataka's architecture and scenic beauty, Kerala's unique culture and natural treasures, Punjab's legacy of bravery and sacrifice, the heritage of Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh's tribal culture, forests and minerals.
He noted that these states have been vital to the nation's unity, integrity and development, and expressed confidence that they would help realise Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of a Viksit Bharat.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also congratulated the people of Andhra Pradesh. In his post on X, he celebrated the state's spiritual heritage, ancient civilisation and living folk traditions. He expressed the hope that under Prime Minister Modi's guidance and Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's leadership, the state would touch new peaks of growth and prosperity, and offered his prayers to Lord Shri Mallikarjuna.
Tamil Nadu also observes a foundation day on the same date. Two days are celebrated as Tamil Nadu Day: November 1 and July 18. November 1 recalls the formation of Madras State on a linguistic basis in 1956. July 18 marks the 1967 unanimous approval in the Madras Legislative Assembly of a proposal to rename the state 'Tamil Nadu'.
