Amritsar Leads Punjab with 49 Stubble Fire Incidents
Amritsar district has emerged as the hotspot for stubble burning in Punjab, accounting for 49 of the 84 incidents reported statewide. The State Air Quality Management Commission's October 5 report indicates that 45 farms in Amritsar were inspected, confirming illegal burning at 13 sites.
Environmental compensation was imposed in 11 of these cases, totaling ₹55,000, of which ₹35,000 has already been collected. Additionally, 32 warning and show‑cause notices were served to the violators.
The broader state picture shows 78 farms inspected across all districts, with 30 confirmed burnings. Overall, 28 cases attracted compensation penalties amounting to ₹1.4 lakh, and ₹55,000 has been recovered. Thirteen farmers received red entries in their records, and a single FIR was lodged.
Tarn Taran reported 18 incidents, with 16 farms inspected and nine confirmed burnings, leading to fines of ₹45,000, of which ₹10,000 is collected, and nine red entries recorded. Firozpur logged five incidents, all confirmed, resulting in a ₹25,000 compensation and four red entries. Patiala recorded two confirmed incidents, with a combined fine of ₹10,000 still pending and an FIR filed.
These figures highlight Amritsar's leading role in the state's stubble‑burning challenge and underscore the enforcement measures being applied across Punjab.
