Fire Breaks Out in Amravati NICU, Staff Rescue Hundreds, Three Babies Lost

Early Monday morning, a fire ignited in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit of Amravati’s District Women’s Hospital, leading to the loss of three newborns. The fire originated from an unexpected explosion in a ventilator on the third floor at around 3:30 a.m.

The NICU was caring for 39 infants when smoke and flames spread rapidly. Doctors, nurses, and auxiliary staff responded instantly, evacuating the majority of the newborns to a safe zone away from the danger.

Despite the rapid evacuation, three infants suffered fatal burns. Six critically ill newborns were transferred to a super‑speciality hospital for continued treatment.

Firefighters contained the fire before it could affect other parts of the hospital, though the NICU’s equipment and supplies were largely destroyed.
