Alleged Embezzlement in Shivganga Student Dormitories Prompts Legal Questions
The Shivganga district of Tamil Nadu is at the centre of a controversy involving the alleged embezzlement of funds meant for Adi Dravidar welfare hostel facilities. T. Velmurugan, a former MLA and TVK leader, has urged a full-scale probe covering the six‑year span from 2017 to 2023.
He argued that the misuse of public money not only affects the quality of life for thousands of students but also raises serious questions about the integrity of the administrative machinery tasked with overseeing these programmes. The Madras High Court’s recent scrutiny of eight district officers has intensified calls for accountability.
Velmurugan noted that some of the accused have already been promoted or retired, creating a perception of impunity. He demanded that the enquiry examine whether procedural lapses allowed such outcomes and whether all individuals involved have been thoroughly vetted.
The leader concluded that the state must ensure that any recovered funds are redirected to the original purpose and that legal action be taken against every person found complicit, regardless of their rank or party affiliation.
