Fleeing Driver and Late Police Response Draw Criticism after Aligarh Flyover Accident
A chaotic collision unfolded on Aligarh's Meenakshi flyover on 8 November when a fast‑moving white car, clearly marked with a police sticker, plowed into a line of vehicles. Among the victims was a pregnant woman riding a scooter with her spouse; the impact hurled her from the flyover, leaving her with severe injuries that required admission to Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College.
The offending car also smashed into another two‑wheeler, breaking the rider’s finger. Authorities estimate that between three and four individuals were injured, all of whom were taken to hospitals for treatment. Inside the vehicle, police personnel discovered a police cap and several bottles of beer and other alcoholic drinks.
Local on‑lookers, particularly a woman named Jyoti who was passing by with her child, accused the police of a sluggish response despite the crash occurring right in front of a police outpost. She reported that ambulances were delayed, compelling the injured woman to be shifted to the hospital in an e‑rickshaw. Jyoti also noted that the woman's daughter suffered minor injuries.
According to City Superintendent of Police Aditya Bansal, the driver fled the scene immediately after the crash. Police are now compiling photographic and video evidence, and are working to ascertain the identities of the vehicle’s owner, driver and any passengers. A formal case has been lodged, and officials promise rigorous prosecution of all parties involved.
