Ahmedabad Food Safety Authority Takes Action on Hundreds of Violations
The Food Safety Department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has taken decisive steps after uncovering hundreds of violations in recent food safety inspections. Data released on Saturday shows that from January to October 2026, the department collected 7,339 samples – a sizable increase from the 4,071 samples collected in the same period of the previous year. Substandard findings rose from 131 to 327, marking a 150 percent surge.
Administrative fees levied on violators also rose sharply, climbing from 62.11 lakh rupees to more than 1.01 crore rupees. Between 1 October and 2 November, inspectors gathered 841 samples spanning sweets, dairy, savory snacks, flours, spices, oils, bakery items and ready‑to‑eat foods.
Twenty‑seven of those recent samples were flagged as non‑standard, with a few classified as unsafe. Enforcement actions under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 have been launched against the owners of the flagged establishments.
Among the products found lacking were open ghee from Gujarat Dairy (Dariapur), butter from Om Food Centre (Sarkhej), tomato sauce from Janata Fast Food (Maninagar), low‑fat paneer from Inus Chinese Punjabi, and several types of mawa and sugary syrups. Other breaches included the use of counterfeit food silver, high levels of total polar compounds in frying oil, and the absence of valid contracts for oil disposal.
During the two‑day inspection window, 2,226 food premises were examined, 660 notices were issued, and approximately 1,345 kg/L of unsafe food was destroyed. The department collected a total administrative fee of 11,28,500 rupees. Nineteen establishments faced sealing or closure for operating without a proper FSSAI licence, poor hygiene, improper ingredient handling, or repeated violations of food safety standards.
The department has warned that it will intensify future inspections, emphasizing clean‑room practices, valid licensing, and strict adherence to the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporation Act alongside FSSAI regulations.
