After MLC Results, Debate on Voting Rights and Poll Fairness Grows

New Delhi, October 29: The debate over voting rights and electoral fairness has gained fresh momentum after the MLC election results. Opposition leaders have accused the BJP of ignoring core democratic concerns while pointing to alleged irregularities in the polls.

Congress MP Manish Tiwari linked the opposition's agitation to the fight for voting rights. Responding to the BJP's padyatra, he said that 13 crore people had allegedly been stripped of their right to vote. He suggested that restoring those rights would make such public campaigns unnecessary.

Tiwari further criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's reaction to the MLC results. He stressed that every election has a distinct purpose, voter base and geographic scope. MLC elections, he said, involve different electorates and constituencies, so remarks by the head of government should reflect that. He urged that outcomes be judged on the basis of each seat's specific conditions.

SP spokesperson Udayveer Singh credited the results to the aspirations of educated citizens and youth in Uttar Pradesh. He said the party's vote share in seats it contested had risen sharply over the previous election, and that it had captured new constituencies. He blamed administrative pressure and bias for losses by narrow margins in some seats.

Harendra Malik of the SP, speaking from Delhi, dismissed Congress's stance as its own matter. He lauded the party's performance under unfavourable conditions and said it had won five of 11 seats. Malik also charged that thousands of names had been removed from graduate and teacher constituency rolls in his district and that overall voting had declined compared with the earlier election.

These statements highlight how voting rights, voter rolls and electoral integrity have become key issues in the political discourse after the MLC results. The allegations of irregularities have not been independently confirmed, and they must be examined against verified facts and official records.
