Gandhinagar’s Police Bhavan buzzed with celebration as Gujarat Police’s young Labrador sensation ‘Check’ brought home gold and bronze from the prestigious 69th All India Police Duty Meet in Nagpur. At just three years and six months, the Anand district dog ended a 16-year drought for his force on the national stage.
Over March-April 2026, more than 200 dogs vied in high-stakes events: sniffing out explosives and narcotics, navigating agility courses, obeying commands flawlessly, and mastering tracking trails. ‘Check’ shone brightest in tracking, securing gold amid 45 fierce competitors from India’s top police and paramilitary units.
DGP K.L.N. Rao lauded the trio—’Check,’ handler Ramesh Khant, and trainer Colonel Chandan Singh Rathod—during a special Friday felicitation. “This is Gujarat Police’s pride,” Rathod said, recounting the grueling regimen that propelled ‘Check’ to bronze in overall tracking too.
Strategic groundwork paid off: Under DGP (Training) Dr. Neerja Gotru’s guidance, a state meet honed nine dogs, with six representing Gujarat in three categories—two each in tracking, explosives, and narcotics detection.
These victories highlight the backbone of Gujarat’s 160-strong police dog fleet, trained for everything from chasing fugitives to detecting illicit substances and bombs. Their deployment across districts bolsters public safety in multifaceted ways.
As national spotlights return to Gujarat’s K9 capabilities, this feat signals a resurgence, blending cutting-edge training with canine instinct to combat crime effectively.
