Maharashtra Leads India in Active Corporate Entities and New Registrations

Data released by the state government shows that Maharashtra continues to top the list of Indian states with the highest number of operational companies, totaling 396,211. The state also recorded the largest intake of newly incorporated firms in the 2025‑26 financial year, with 41,525 entities joining the corporate register.

Following the Chief Minister’s clarification, it emerged that the 36,211 companies removed from the register comprised largely of non‑operational units: 76% were dormant, 12% merged into larger corporate groups, 2% were formally liquidated, and the remaining 10% were eliminated for compliance‑related reasons. Such figures align with a national average of 20,000‑22,000 deregistrations annually, reflecting standard regulatory maintenance rather than a regional crisis.

The broader picture underscores a vibrant Indian economy, where active corporate registrations have surged from under seven lakh in 2015‑16 to more than twenty‑one lakh a decade later. Maharashtra’s continued dominance in both active and newly created firms signals sustained investor confidence and a healthy business environment.
