Abdullah Urges Public to Stand Up for Kashmir's Rights
Srinagar, October 24: Jammu and Kashmir National Conference chief and former Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah has argued that the region's people are being spared because Pakistan keeps highlighting Kashmiri issues on international forums. He also questioned the intentions of the central government and urged citizens to demand their rights.
At a workers' convention in Baramulla, Abdullah said, “Pakistan is raising the matter in many places and talking about Kashmiris. That is the reason the people of Jammu and Kashmir are surviving. Otherwise, India's intentions towards Kashmiris are not correct.”
During the event, he criticised the current administration of Jammu and Kashmir over the health sector. He said students pursuing studies in the Union Territory must serve in hospitals for two years, failing which they are required to pay 40 lakh rupees to the state.
According to Abdullah, this is the only state where a file on this issue has been pending with the Lieutenant Governor for over a year, and no decision has been taken.
He also raised concerns about the working of medical institutions. Previously, he said, the director of a medical institute and a committee decided on the purchase of equipment and the appointment of doctors. He alleged that the present arrangement has removed all those powers. “I asked them if you have ended autonomy, and they accepted it right in front of me,” he said.
Abdullah stated that people should not expect justice from Delhi. He appealed to them to raise their voice for their own rights. “Have the courage to confront them, or you will be wiped out,” he warned.
He said the region would move forward with the country and was prepared to make sacrifices for it, but told those in power to correct their own conduct.
Abdullah added that he must answer to both the people and Allah, and that is why he speaks the truth before the public.
“They make huge claims and talk about discussion, but what can you expect from Delhi? Do you think they will stand with you? No. Be brave and face them. If you don't, our identity will be erased. That is why we must speak,” he said.
