Political Rhetoric Escalates as AAP and BJP Clash Over Drug Smuggling

Delhi, September 21 — A political showdown over the drug crisis in Punjab took a new turn on social media on Monday. AAP’s national convenor Arvind Kejriwal directly attacked BJP national president Nitin Nirav Naveen’s recent remarks that the anti‑drug fight should begin in Punjab because the state’s youth are at risk.

Kejriwal posted that the real battle must start at Gujarat’s Mundra Port, the primary entry point for narcotics entering the country. He wrote, “If you are truly concerned about Punjab, first stop the drugs that arrive from Gujarat.” The comment sparked a wave of responses from party supporters and analysts alike.

The BJP’s “Nasha Mukt Punjab Yatra” is scheduled to roll across all 117 assembly segments, covering roughly 4,000 kilometres. The tour aims to raise awareness, strengthen law‑enforcement coordination, and deter drug usage among young people. Naveen cited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s personal message urging the party to prioritize Punjab in the fight against narcotics.

Opposition voices, led by Kejriwal, contend that the campaign overlooks the supply side of the problem. They cite recent interceptions at Mundra Port where large quantities of heroin, amphetamine, and synthetic drugs were seized. Punjab’s finance minister Harpal Singh Cheema has also demanded a BJP response on the issue, linking the state’s drug woes directly to coastal smuggling.

As both parties trade barbs, the larger question remains: will the Yatra succeed in curbing drug consumption without addressing the inbound trafficking routes that fuel the epidemic?
