63-Day Hunger Strike Remembered as Jatindranath Das' Ultimate Sacrifice

The 63‑day fast undertaken by Jatindranath Das in colonial prison walls remains a defining episode in India’s struggle for freedom. On his martyrdom day, senior leaders highlighted how this prolonged hunger protest disrupted the British administration and spotlighted the inhuman treatment of Indian political prisoners.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah described the fast as a “living example of unbreakable resolve,” stating that Das’s determination to endure extreme deprivation for the cause of independence continues to motivate citizens.

Other ministers, including Nitin Gadkari and Energy Minister Manohar Lal, praised Das’s refusal to compromise, noting that his resolve helped awaken a broader national consciousness.

Chief Ministers Rekha Gupta of Delhi and Samrat Chaudhary of Bihar also paid their respects, emphasizing that Das’s sacrifice is a reminder that the price of liberty often demands the ultimate personal offering.
