Celebrating 40 Years of World Housing Day – ESCAP’s Six Essentials for Liveable Cities

World Housing Day turned 40 on October 5, marking four decades of international focus on shelter and urban quality of life. The United Nations chose Muscat, Oman, as the host city for the anniversary celebrations, using the platform to unveil a concise checklist for what makes a city truly liveable.

ESCAP outlined six essential attributes. The first calls for proximity: workplaces, retail outlets, educational institutions and recreational parks should be located within walking or cycling distance, slashing travel time and cutting emissions.

The second emphasizes that nature belongs in the urban built environment. Green corridors, community gardens and tree‑lined streets not only beautify but also protect cities from heat spikes and flood risks.

Housing safety and affordability rank third. ESCAP urges governments to expand affordable housing schemes that guarantee reliable water, electricity and secure structures for low‑income families.

The fourth pillar highlights the role of smart technology. Digital tools can provide early warnings for natural hazards, streamline e‑government services and better manage resources, thereby improving urban efficiency.

Mobility, the fifth pillar, must be universal. Pedestrian pathways, accessible public transport and barrier‑free routes enable the elderly, children and persons with disabilities to move freely.

The final pillar stresses community engagement. When local residents take part in planning and decision‑making, cities evolve to meet real needs rather than top‑down visions.

UN Habitat also posted a tribute, noting that the day serves as a global rallying point for housing‑related challenges. Indian responses, from the Manipur state government to Delhi’s housing minister, underscored the collective duty to guarantee safe, inclusive and sustainable homes for every citizen.
