35 Soldiers Begin Challenging Ascent of Uttarakhand’s Mount Kamet

On August 21, a mixed unit of 35 Indian and Argentine soldiers launched a daring climb of Mount Kamet, the 7,756‑meter giant that crowns Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district. The peak is listed as the third highest in the country.

The expedition received its go‑ahead from Lieutenant General Ajay Ramdev, Director General of Integrated Training and Army Service Corps, at New Delhi’s Manekshaw Centre. He highlighted the strategic significance of such joint operations.

Command of the ascent rests with Lieutenant Colonel Chirag Chaturvedi. The force is composed of 25 Indian army personnel and 10 from the Argentine armed forces, illustrating a deepening military‑to‑military relationship.

High‑altitude climbing is fraught with hazards: reduced oxygen, treacherous rock and ice sections, and rapidly shifting weather patterns. The troops will have to draw on peak physical fitness, specialist climbing expertise, and tight coordination to overcome these obstacles.

This is the third collaborative mountain mission between the two nations. Their earlier ventures included a joint summit of Argentina’s Mount Aconcagua in January 2025 and a successful climb of the 7,077‑meter Mount Kun in Ladakh in August 2025.

Lt. Gen. Ramdev remarked that joint climbs nurture trust, goodwill, and professional understanding among allied forces, extending well beyond the realm of sport. He extended his best wishes for a victorious summit and a safe return, noting that the conquest of Mount Kamet will stand as a new symbol of bilateral friendship.
