Tensions simmered into violence in Mathura’s Kosikalan after the demise of local figure Farsa Baba, prompting police to file charges against over 300 people. The Saturday incident stemmed from a fatal collision involving a truck and a canter, sparking outrage that saw attacks on officials using stones, lathis, and gunfire.
Fourteen arrests have been made, with police deploying teams across areas to hunt down fugitives. SSP Shlok Kumar emphasized that external elements fueled the chaos through deliberate misinformation, vowing quick action against rumor-mongers.
Recounting the mishap, Kumar noted Farsa Baba halted a Nagaland-plated canter over suspicions of livestock smuggling. Fog shrouded the scene as he checked the vehicle, only for an oncoming truck to ram him. Both Baba and the Alwar-based driver succumbed to injuries despite medical aid.
Inspections confirmed wires in the truck and groceries in the canter, debunking smuggling claims. An FIR for the accident was lodged based on a witness statement from Baba’s companion.
To curb escalation, authorities activated a sector scheme, with officials on round-the-clock vigilance. Kumar appealed for responsible social media use, stressing fact-checked sharing to prevent further unrest in this communally charged belt.
