101 Miniature Butter Vessels Frame Divine Krishna Figure at Odisha Coast

The coastline of Puri witnessed a unique visual ode to Lord Krishna on the occasion of Janmashtami. Sudarshan Patnaik, the Padma Shri‑honoured sand sculptor, crafted a towering eight‑foot figure of the infant deity, surrounded by a circle of 101 small butter pots, each representing the legendary butter‑loving antics of Bal Gopal.

The sculpture showcases the child god seated peacefully, flute in hand, with a calm cow tucked nearby—elements that instantly connect viewers to the pastoral legends of Vrindavan. The 101 butter vessels, placed symmetrically, reinforce the festival’s traditional motif of abundance and joy.

Patnaik’s team, comprising students from his sand‑art institute, spent hours molding the fine grains of sand into lifelike contours, ensuring the statue’s smile, eyes, and garments captured the divine innocence associated with Krishna’s early years.

In an interview, Patnaik conveyed his wish that the artwork spread blessings of peace, health, and prosperity to all who behold it. He also reiterated his belief that sand art can serve as a compelling platform for environmental advocacy and cultural education.

The installation attracted a steady stream of onlookers, from local devotees to travelers, turning the beach into a temporary pilgrimage site that merged spiritual reverence with artistic spectacle.
