Tragedy struck Mathura’s Yamuna River on Friday when a tourist boat flipped over, killing 10 people and leaving many unaccounted for. The accident near KC Ghat has drawn condolences from India’s highest office, with President Droupadi Murmu leading the expressions of sorrow alongside Vice President and Defence Minister.
The boat, loaded with about 30 visitors from Ludhiana, was enjoying a routine cruise when disaster hit at approximately 2:45 PM. It slammed into a pipe bridge before capsizing, according to District Magistrate CP Singh. Rescue teams pulled out 10 bodies, but with reports of missing individuals, the operation has intensified under floodlights into the night.
In a poignant X post, President Murmu wrote, ‘Heartbreaking news of multiple fatalities from the Mathura boat mishap. Deepest sympathies to the families in mourning; I wish swift healing for the wounded.’ Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar shared, ‘Devastated by the Mathura boat overturning. Condolences to the bereaved and prayers for the injured’s recovery.’
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh termed it a ‘painful incident,’ noting, ‘My condolences to the families who lost loved ones. The administration is committed to rescue and relief. Praying for the injured.’
NDRF personnel, local police, and SDRF units are combing the riverbanks and depths. The Yamuna’s strong currents are complicating efforts, raising fears of more bodies. Officials have initiated an inquiry into the cause, examining factors like boat capacity, maintenance, and bridge safety.
Mathura, a spiritual hub drawing millions annually, now grapples with grief. This incident revives memories of similar river tragedies, prompting urgent demands for life jackets, trained operators, and regular inspections. As families cling to hope, the focus shifts to preventing future calamities on these sacred waters.
