Yoga Practice Incomplete Without Yama and Niyama

New Delhi, November 2: Yoga is widely practiced today as a tool for physical fitness and mental relaxation. However, yoga is much more than a set of physical exercises. It is a complete way of living that shapes how a person treats the body, thinks about the world and behaves in daily life.

To understand yoga fully, one must learn the concepts of yama and niyama. They are considered essential to yoga practice and help bring order to both social and personal conduct.

According to yoga philosophy, yama and niyama are the first two limbs of yoga. Yama defines how a person should interact with others. Niyama motivates a person to improve their habits and way of life.

The five principles of yama begin with ahimsa, which means not harming any living being by thought, speech or action, and cultivating empathy. Satya urges honesty in speech and conduct. Asteya means not stealing, which also covers the misuse of another person's property, rights or time. Brahmacharya refers to controlling the senses and maintaining restraint. Aparigraha means avoiding excessive possessions and staying free from greed.

The five principles of niyama include shauch, which is the practice of keeping the body, mind and environment clean. Santosh encourages contentment and gratitude while avoiding unnecessary wants. Swadhyay is the study of good literature and the acquisition of right knowledge for self-improvement. Tap means progressing toward one's goals with discipline, patience and resolve. Ishwar pranidhan involves surrendering one's actions to God and maintaining trust in life.

Experts note that without these principles, yoga remains a partial practice. Yama and niyama together create a strong ethical and mental foundation, allowing yoga to become a truly complete path to health and balance.
