Yoga Pose Akarna Dhanurasana: Benefits, Cautions and Practice
New Delhi, October 30: Among the many asanas described in classical yoga literature, some are recognised for their ability to keep the body healthy from head to toe. Akarna Dhanurasana is one such posture. Its regular practice is said to increase flexibility in the legs, shoulders and waist and to bring a renewed sense of vitality.
Understanding the posture
The asana's name is made up of two Sanskrit terms. 'Akarna' means up to the ear, and 'Dhanush' means bow. In practice, the individual sits, grasps one leg with the hands and brings it up toward the ear. The overall form resembles an arrow on a drawn bow.
Official guidance
According to the Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India, this asana helps make multiple areas of the body both stronger and more elastic. It is done in the shape of a bow and arrow, with one leg held by the hand and drawn near the ear. Practitioners who perform it regularly can gain several health advantages.
Legs and hips
The thighs, hips and hamstrings are the first areas to benefit. The lifting and pulling action of the pose stretches these regions, which encourages greater muscle flexibility and strength. This stretching may also reduce the discomfort many people feel in these muscles.
The spine
A second key benefit concerns the spine. Daily practice builds flexibility in the vertebral column and supports a stronger spinal cord. Improved spinal health may help relieve conditions such as back pain, sciatica and lower back stiffness.
Cautions to observe
The Ministry of AYUSH recommends taking precautions. The asana should only be performed with the guidance of a qualified yoga teacher or mentor. Do not force the leg toward the ear, and avoid putting unnecessary strain on the body. If stretching turns into pain or discomfort, stop practising right away. This asana is strictly not to be done during pregnancy.
