Yoga Caution: Listen to Your Body and Respect Its Limits

Yoga is considered an important component of a healthy lifestyle, offering benefits for both body and mind. It can improve flexibility, build muscle strength and support mental calm. However, these benefits are best realised when yoga is practised with proper technique and according to one's own physical ability.

Several people push themselves too hard in the hope of quick progress. They attempt challenging postures or apply excessive pressure on the body, which may raise the chances of injury or health complications. The Ministry of AYUSH has now drawn attention to these risks.

What the Ministry Advises

Through a post shared on the social media platform X, the Ministry of AYUSH outlined necessary safety measures for yoga practitioners. It said that awareness, self-control and respect for the body's capacity are fundamental to yoga.

The guidance recommends practising gradually, keeping movements smooth, and avoiding jerks, force or pressure. If pain is felt sharply in any part of the body, practitioners should stop the exercise immediately. The ministry also urged people to make mindful practice a regular feature of their yoga routine.

The Problem with Forcing Movements

The ministry pointed out that people often begin with complicated postures, believing that the more they stretch, the faster their flexibility will improve. But every individual has a different level of physical readiness. Comparing oneself with others and forcing the body to keep up is not advisable.

For example, someone performing a forward bend who cannot bend deeply should avoid pulling themselves toward their feet. Bending only to a comfortable extent is the right approach, and regular practice will steadily enhance the body's capacity.

Ignoring Pain Can Cause Harm

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health in the United States, yoga should not be practised when there is severe pain in any part of the body. People often ignore pain while trying to complete a posture, which can lead to injuries in muscles, knees, shoulders or the back. Sprains and muscle strains may also occur.

Focus on Breath and Awareness

The ministry has also stressed mindful practice, which means giving full attention to breathing, body posture and physical signals. Those who do not focus on their breath or rush from one posture to another may overlook discomfort. Moving slowly, pausing when necessary and respecting one's limits are considered the wiser choice.
