WHO Warns of Ongoing Community Ebola Deaths in Eastern Congo

The WHO’s latest regional report emphasizes that the biggest warning sign of the DRC outbreak is the high number of deaths occurring before patients can receive medical care. Of the 430 confirmed fatalities reviewed, a staggering 92.3 % died outside health facilities, highlighting weak surveillance and referral networks. Contact tracing has reached 12,412 individuals, yet only a third of new cases are linked to these monitored contacts, suggesting that many infections are still being missed. Treatment infrastructure is nearing its limits, with 22 treatment centres housing about 700 beds, and isolation occupancy at 94.2 %. The organization also notes that the public‑health risk in the DRC is classified as "very high" because the virus is spreading faster than the response capacity can contain it.
