Violent Attack on UDPS Official Highlights Ebola Response Risks in Eastern DRC
The murder of Marie‑Celestin Karondewa underscores growing insecurity as the Ebola epidemic spreads across eastern DRC. Karondewa, who served as acting chair of the UDPS federal executive board in Butembo, was targeted after a radio broadcast that urged citizens to take the virus seriously.
According to party sources, gunmen intercepted the official at a checkpoint, beat him mercilessly, stole his belongings and set his home ablaze. He later died from the injuries sustained.
The incident arrives amid a wave of attacks on health workers, treatment centers and even hand‑washing checkpoints, which have hampered efforts to contain the outbreak.
Health ministry data as of September 26 record 8,067 confirmed cases and 3,901 deaths, a mortality rate exceeding 48 %. The UDPS has demanded a thorough investigation and swift prosecution of those responsible.
