Successful Robotic Nissen Fundoplication Carried Out in Ajmer
Jaipur, October 22: Doctors in Ajmer have successfully performed a complex hiatus hernia operation using robotic technology, adding a new chapter to the region's healthcare capabilities. The surgery was led by Dr. Shiv Kumar Bunkar, a laparoscopic and robotic surgeon at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College and Hospital.
The patient, aged 21, had been experiencing indigestion, acid reflux, and chest discomfort for two months. Following an examination and medical consultation, the team recommended surgical treatment.
Dr. Shyam Bhatt guided the treatment plan. The operation involved a robotic Nissen fundoplication, a technique in which the upper portion of the stomach is wrapped around the lower end of the oesophagus. This forms a valve-like structure that reduces the chance of stomach acid moving back into the food pipe. The hiatus problem was also corrected as needed.
The patient's pre-operative and post-operative care was supervised by Principal Dr. Anil Samariya. Dr. Arvind Khare, other doctors, nursing personnel, and the anaesthesia team were also part of the effort.
Dr. Bunkar explained that robotic systems provide improved visibility, enhanced precision, and better control of subtle movements during intricate surgeries. He noted that such benefits may help improve treatment results for selected patients.
Doctors say that performing complicated surgical procedures with robotic support is an important step toward expanding advanced healthcare in the city. The development also reinforces efforts to offer modern medical treatment closer to home.
Hiatus hernia is a condition where the upper stomach pushes through an opening in the diaphragm and moves toward the chest. Typical symptoms include heartburn, sour belching, difficulty swallowing, pain in the upper chest or abdomen, and frequent gas or bloating.
