State orders extra hospital beds and oxygen to curb swine flu spread

Jharkhand’s health administration has taken decisive steps to prepare its medical infrastructure for a possible surge in swine flu cases. Following the detection of 36 H1N1 infections over the last thirty days, officials have mandated that every district hospital reserve at least ten additional beds for flu patients.

The directive also requires a guaranteed supply of medical oxygen, essential antiviral drugs, and fully functional ICU and HDU units. Specialist physicians and trained paramedical staff must be on call around the clock to manage severe respiratory complications.

Enhanced testing for H1N1 and H3N2 viruses is now available at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Ranchi and at the MGB Hospital in Jamshedpur, enabling rapid confirmation and treatment. Daily situation reports are being collated from each district to provide a real‑time picture of the outbreak.

Travelers returning from Delhi, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and Rajasthan are being screened more rigorously, with heightened monitoring at airports, railway terminals and interstate bus stands. The health department stresses that while panic is unwarranted, people with chronic illnesses, the elderly and young children should be especially cautious.

Common symptoms include sudden high fever, chills, persistent cough, sore throat, muscle aches, and in younger children, gastrointestinal upset. Health officials urge the public to avoid self‑medication and to consult a doctor immediately if any of these signs appear.
