State Launches Child‑Focused Camps to Detect Sickle Cell and TB Early

Madhya Pradesh’s Governor Mangubhai Patel has ordered a swift expansion of child‑focused health camps across the state to screen for sickle‑cell disease and tuberculosis. Speaking at Lok Bhawan during a joint review of the National Sickle Cell Elimination Mission 2047 and the National TB Elimination Programme, Patel urged officials to prioritize primary schools and Anganwadi centres for the screening drive.

To date, 1.34 crore individuals have undergone sickle‑cell testing in the state. The Governor emphasized that early identification of affected children and carriers is vital for delivering accurate counseling, preventive measures, and continuous medical follow‑up.

Patel called the children “the nation’s future” and stressed that their well‑being must be at the forefront of public‑health planning. He appealed to legislators and local leaders to actively support the campaigns, encouraging collaboration with MPs and state lawmakers to allocate the necessary financial and logistical backing for school‑based camps.

A distinctive feature of the Governor’s plan is the mobilisation of youth. He urged higher‑education institutions to recruit students as “Sickle Mitra” volunteers, amplifying awareness and education efforts within communities.

Deputy Chief Minister Rajendra Shukla shared that 92% of screened individuals received genetic status cards, and the programme has created 4,825 “Sickle Mitra” volunteers. He also highlighted that Madhya Pradesh’s TB cure rate now stands at 89%, with a significant drop in TB mortality, showcasing the success of integrated disease‑control initiatives.
