Six MV Hondius Passengers Face Longer Isolation Amid Hantavirus Alert

Western Australian officials have lengthened the isolation period for six former passengers of the MV Hondius cruise ship, pushing their release date to 23 June. The travellers, who returned negative tests and remain symptom-free, must now stay at a Perth-area quarantine centre for an additional month. The move comes after health authorities identified thirteen confirmed hantavirus cases linked to the vessel. Experts believe the 42-day monitoring window is essential because the virus can remain dormant before symptoms appear. Speaking to reporters, Health Minister Mark Butler emphasised that the extension followed recommendations from both domestic specialists and the World Health Organization. He added that the risk to the wider community is considered low but not zero. Hantavirus is carried mainly by rodents, and human-to-human spread is uncommon. Nevertheless, authorities are unwilling to take chances with a pathogen that has already caused three fatalities worldwide in the current outbreak. Daily medical assessments will continue at the facility, and officials have assured families that every precaution is being taken to protect both the quarantined individuals and the public.
