Scientific Communication Needed as India Battles Lifestyle Illnesses
New Delhi, July 19 – In a statement that underscored the urgency of tackling non‑communicable diseases, Union Science and Technology Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh called for a nationwide campaign centred on scientific communication. He said the escalating burden of cancer, diabetes, obesity, fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions requires a coordinated effort that moves beyond hospitals to include public education, rapid screening and evidence‑based interventions.
Speaking at the unveiling of a book chronicling a personal fight against cancer, the minister warned that misinformation is eroding public confidence in health advice. He urged that credible, science‑backed guidance become the cornerstone of India’s health agenda, especially as these ailments begin to affect younger demographics.
Dr. Singh highlighted that early detection dramatically improves survival rates for many cancers, and that preventive measures—balanced nutrition, regular physical activity and periodic medical exams—must become a routine part of Indian life to alleviate the growing lifestyle‑disease load.
