Schools to earn ‘tobacco‑free educational institution’ badge after scoring 90%

According to the SOP, a self‑evaluation score of at least 90 out of 100 points will qualify a school for the “Tobacco‑Free Educational Institution” certification. The scoring system evaluates the presence of anti‑tobacco activities, the condition of the campus, and the effectiveness of counselling services offered to students identified with tobacco dependence.

The initiative was triggered by a state‑wide health survey that highlighted a worrying 8.5 % prevalence of tobacco use among teenagers aged 13‑15. By institutionalising regular audits and incentivising schools with an official badge, the government hopes to create a deterrent effect and encourage peer‑led advocacy against tobacco.

Public health officials emphasise that strict enforcement of the 2003 anti‑tobacco law will accompany the SOP, ensuring that any violation – such as the sale of tobacco products near school grounds – is met with immediate corrective action.
