The remarkable medical career of Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy

Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy’s life reads like a chronicle of medical excellence intertwined with nation‑building. Born on 1 July 1882 in Patna, his early education at Patna College paved the way for a medical degree from Calcutta Medical College. Determined to master his craft, he ventured to London, where, after surmounting admission challenges at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, he obtained the MRCP and FRCS qualifications—making him the first Indian to hold both concurrently. In India, Roy’s practice was distinguished by his uncanny ability to diagnose ailments through pulse and facial examination, a skill that earned him the trust of leaders from Mahatma Gandhi to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Beyond the clinic, he was a founding member of the Indian Medical Association and entered public service as Calcutta’s mayor in 1931. Post‑independence, he served as West Bengal’s chief minister from 1948, driving notable advances in health, education, and infrastructure. His dedication was recognized with the Bharat Ratna in 1961.
