Regulatory Steps Strengthen Ayush Drug Oversight on E‑Commerce

The central government has tightened regulations governing the sale of Ayush medicines on internet marketplaces. Effective immediately, e‑commerce platforms must obtain a scanned, authentic prescription from a registered Ayurvedic, Siddha or Unani practitioner before listing any product that requires medical supervision.

State Ayush Minister Prataprav Jadhav emphasized that this requirement aligns with the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, 1940, which already mandates licensing, manufacturing standards and periodic quality testing for traditional medicines. Inspectors routinely draw samples from factories and pharmacies, sending them to government‑certified laboratories for analysis. Non‑conforming batches lead to prosecution of the responsible parties.

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organization now hosts an Ayush‑focused vertical to coordinate inspections, certification and enforcement. Under the Quality Council of India's third‑party evaluation scheme, compliant products receive "Ayush Standard" or "Ayush Premium" labels, providing a clear quality signal to buyers.

The ministry also launched the Ayush Safety Portal, a real‑time grievance redressal system that records complaints about misleading advertisements and adverse drug reactions. The portal will be the first point of contact for consumers and will feed data to enforcement agencies for swift action.
