Preventing the Spread of Swine Flu: Practical Guidelines

Swine flu can spread quickly in crowded settings, especially when people mistake its early signs for a simple seasonal cold. Implementing simple preventive habits can curb transmission and protect families and communities.

Rest is the foundation of recovery. Stay home until you are fever‑free for at least 24 hours without the aid of medication. This reduces the likelihood of exposing others.

Maintain optimal hydration by drinking water, herbal infusions or clear soups throughout the day. Proper fluid intake helps thin mucus secretions and eases coughing.

When you need to leave the house, wear a mask that covers both nose and mouth. Masks are especially important in public transport, markets or workplaces where social distance is difficult.

Isolate yourself from high‑risk members of the household—elderly relatives, infants, and individuals with chronic conditions. If interaction is unavoidable, keep a distance of at least one meter and practice hand hygiene before and after contact.

Always use a tissue or the inside of your elbow to block coughs and sneezes. Dispose of tissues in a closed bin and wash hands with soap for at least 20 seconds. Hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol can be used when soap isn’t readily available.

Monitor your condition closely. If fever persists beyond three days, breathing becomes labored, or you feel unusually weak, seek professional medical care without delay. Early treatment can shorten illness duration and limit complications.

Do not self‑prescribe antibiotics or antivirals. Only a qualified practitioner can assess whether medication is required based on clinical evaluation and test results.
