The body’s internal clock, or circadian rhythm, naturally lowers alertness between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. If the previous night’s sleep was insufficient, the body’s demand for rest adds to this dip, making the post‑lunch slump more evident.
To combat the slump, aim for a plate that includes legumes, whole grains, lean protein and vegetables. Avoid overly large portions and limit sugary desserts. Consistent night‑time sleep of at least seven hours helps the body reset, reducing the severity of afternoon drowsiness.
