Police Launch Probe into Death of 25-Year-Old Expectant Mother in Bihar
Authorities in Bihar have opened a formal investigation after a 25‑year‑old pregnant woman died while undergoing a surgery at a private clinic in West Champaran’s Narkatiaganj area. The deceased, recognized as Salma Khatun, the wife of Riyaz Ahmad, was five months pregnant when she was admitted following a report of fetal loss.
The family claims that a D&C was initially arranged with a quoted fee of 14,000 rupees, of which a large portion had already been paid. The treating doctor later labeled the D&C unsafe, insisting on a more invasive surgical option and requesting an additional 25,000 rupees. After the family agreed, the operation took place, during which Salma’s condition worsened and she succumbed.
Eyewitnesses allege that the clinic’s administrators suggested moving the body via ambulance and then left the premises, prompting an angry outcry from relatives and locals. Demonstrators gathered outside the clinic demanding accountability.
Police, supported by the 112 emergency squad, secured the location, recorded testimonies, and began forensic examinations. The Sub‑division Hospital’s Deputy Superintendent, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, confirmed that the case has been logged and that appropriate legal steps will follow the completion of the inquiry.
