Guidelines for a Nutritious Meal Plate in India

Since its launch in 1982, National Nutrition Week has aimed to educate Indians that a healthy diet requires a careful balance of macro‑ and micronutrients. The core message is simple: a plate should contain a mix of protein, carbs, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals, fiber and water.

**Cereals** – roti, rice, millet, oats, poha or upma provide energy. Choose whole‑grain options for added fiber. **Proteins** – dal, beans, soy, paneer, eggs, fish or dairy supply the building blocks for muscles and enzymes, especially important for children, adolescents and the elderly. **Vegetables** – include green leafy varieties and other colorful vegetables to cover a spectrum of vitamins and minerals. **Fruits** – make seasonal fruits a daily habit; they are better than sugary drinks or artificially flavored juices. **Dairy** – milk, curd and cheese contribute calcium and high‑quality protein.

Avoid relying on packaged snacks such as chips, biscuits, instant noodles or sweetened beverages as regular meals. These items are high in empty calories and low in essential nutrients. Instead, practice portion control, serve food on a plate rather than directly from packets, and encourage mindful eating without the distraction of television or mobile screens.
