National Heart Transplant Day Celebrates a Historic 1994 Success

Every year on August 3, India observes National Heart Transplant Day, a tribute to the pioneering heart transplant performed on 3 August 1994 at AIIMS, New Delhi. The operation, led by Dr. P. Venugopal, involved a team of roughly twenty cardiac experts who replaced the diseased heart of 42‑year‑old Devi Ram with a donor organ in just under an hour.

The success arrived shortly after the Human Organ Transplant Act was signed into law on 7 July 1994, granting legal clarity to organ donation and transplantation. This legislative breakthrough removed previous regulatory obstacles, allowing the AIIMS team to proceed with confidence.

The transplant’s triumph placed India on the global map of advanced cardiac surgery, demonstrating that high‑risk procedures could be performed domestically. In recognition, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee declared the date a national observance in 2003, hosting a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s residence that included Health Minister Sushma Swaraj and AIIMS director Dr. Venugopal.

The event also launched the national promotion of the Organ Retrieval Banking Organization (ORBO), aimed at improving donor organ management. Over the ensuing years, the country has built a network of transplant centers, offering life‑saving surgeries to thousands. Yet, the core challenge persists: expanding organ‑donation awareness to meet the growing demand for hearts and other vital organs.
