Nagaland Imposes Strict ASF Controls After Mizoram Outbreak

Kohima: In response to confirmed cases of African Swine Fever, Nagaland has become the second northeastern state this month to enact emergency trade curbs on pigs and pork. The restrictions, announced by the Directorate of Animal Husbandry, seek to break transmission chains before the disease reaches commercial piggeries. Field staff have been deployed for round-the-clock surveillance, awareness drives and rapid sample collection. District administrations are empowered to seize and destroy any consignments attempting to cross quarantine lines. While the pathogen poses no risk to people, it inflicts severe economic damage on rural households dependent on backyard pig rearing. Officials are therefore appealing to farmers, transporters and local bodies to report unusual mortality without delay and to follow rigorous on-farm disinfection routines. Carcasses must be disposed of only through approved incineration or deep-burial methods; dumping in open areas is explicitly banned.
