Kohima: Nagaland authorities have moved swiftly to contain the spread of African Swine Fever after fresh cases emerged across several districts. The state’s veterinary department has directed district administrations to enforce bans on pig and pork trade, transport, and sales in high-risk zones. While the virus does not infect humans, it is devastating for pig-rearing communities. Officials stressed that rapid reporting and strict biosecurity are critical to limit losses for thousands of farmers who depend on pig farming for their livelihood. Veterinary teams are actively engaged in field surveillance, sample testing, and public awareness drives. The department has appealed to farmers and traders to avoid moving animals without authorization and to follow rigorous sanitation protocols on farms. Residents have also been warned against improper disposal of dead pigs. Dumping carcasses in open areas or water bodies is likely to accelerate the spread of infection. The department continues to coordinate with local bodies to ensure compliance and early detection of new cases.
