Meningococcal Outbreak Response Leads to Prophylactic Campaign in Nagaland

Following a confirmed case of meningococcal disease in a 14‑year‑old from the region, Nagaland’s health authorities, in coordination with the army’s medical wing, rolled out an extensive prophylactic vaccination drive at the Soldier School in Pungalwa. The initiative targeted the entire school community – 678 individuals – to curb the spread of Neisseria meningitidis, a bacterium that can cause meningitis or septicemia. The advisory stressed early detection, rapid reporting and immediate public‑health action to prevent outbreaks, especially in cramped hostel settings where the disease spreads through respiratory droplets and close contact.
