Auckland is on high alert following the detection of two measles cases connected to overseas travel. The new cases, belonging to the same family, have prompted a swift public health response targeting flight SQ281 from Singapore, which landed on February 17. Authorities are urging anyone present at the airport or Waitakere Hospital at the time of exposure to monitor for symptoms. Measles is exceptionally infectious; before the 1963 vaccine, major epidemics occurred every few years, resulting in millions of deaths annually.
