A comprehensive Australian study spanning 14 years examined 480,000 adults who started the research free of diabetes. The investigators discovered that individuals with excess fat **and** reduced muscle mass—classified as sarcopenic obesity—faced a dramatically higher probability of developing type‑2 diabetes.

Statistical analysis showed the sarcopenic‑obese group was over three and a half times more likely to become diabetic than persons with a normal muscle‑fat profile. The risk exceeded that of obesity alone by 19 % and was 91 % higher than in people who only suffered from low muscle mass.

During the decade‑long follow‑up, about 15 % of sarcopenic‑obese participants were diagnosed with type‑2 diabetes. The figure for the solely obese group was close to 11 %, while only roughly 3 % of individuals with a healthy body composition experienced the disease. Women and adults younger than 60 showed the strongest correlation.

Zhongyang Guan, the study’s lead author, emphasized that these insights refute the belief that diabetes risk hinges solely on body weight. Muscle health, he argued, must be evaluated alongside conventional metrics like BMI.

According to senior professor Mario Cervero, integrating resistance training, regular aerobic activity, and protein‑rich nutrition into daily routines can preserve muscle mass, thereby cutting the risk of type‑2 diabetes—especially as populations age and obesity becomes more prevalent.
