IIT Delhi Launches New Psychologist Hiring and Grievance Panel

IIT Delhi has announced a sweeping set of reforms designed to elevate student mental health services and institutional grievance handling. The administration has locked in a structured timeline to onboard additional clinical psychologists and professional counselors. Alongside this personnel upgrade, the institute will initiate broad outreach programs focused on psychological wellness and statutory guidelines concerning substance use.

To streamline complaint resolution, the campus will also appoint an independent student grievance redressal officer. These initiatives are part of a meticulously planned rollout strategy aimed at modernizing campus welfare mechanisms. The urgency for such reforms was underscored by the tragic death of student Rakesh Kumar on August 22, 2026.

Following the incident, an external inquiry committee was swiftly convened to examine existing support architectures. The review body, led by retired Delhi High Court Justice Mukta Gupta, featured a senior AIIMS medical specialist and two student representatives. While the committee directed that its comprehensive report remain under wraps, it championed the expansion of psychological assistance frameworks and related institutional protocols.

To execute these directives, IIT Delhi constituted an internal coordination committee. This group brought together the Deputy Director of Operations, the Dean of Student Affairs, the Academic Dean, officials from the Student Affairs Council, the General Secretary of the Student Welfare Board, and the Assistant Registrar for Student Affairs. The team systematically analyzed every external recommendation and engineered a step-by-step execution blueprint.

The administration made the complete proposal, detailing all recommendations and the implementation schedule, available to faculty, staff, and learners on October 31. The blueprint was subsequently scrutinized during a Student Affairs Council session on November 3. Real-time feedback from the student body was actively solicited and embedded into the final policy framework.

The enhanced mental health protocol mandates the hiring of full-time clinical psychologists and specialized counselors to guarantee round-the-clock professional aid. The institute will also increase the deployment of visiting psychiatrists to ensure consistent expert guidance. These steps are designed to deliver prompt, specialized support to students facing psychological challenges.

Prevention efforts will be amplified through extensive awareness drives on mental health conditions and drug-related laws. To build a resilient campus community, mandatory training sessions on empathy, constructive communication, and mental health awareness will be rolled out for administrative workers, hostel personnel, and academic staff.

Recognizing the difficulty of academic reintegration, IIT Delhi is also formalizing a dedicated re-entry program for students returning after prolonged absences. Participants will receive specialized counseling, and academic coordination will be tailored to ease their transition. A peer support framework will be deployed to assist returning students in reconnecting with coursework and campus activities.

To bolster the grievance mechanism, an independent student grievance redressal Lokayukta will be appointed. The institute will also launch a comprehensive audit of its mental health support architecture and welfare guidelines. This review task force, comprising two senior mental health professionals, one welfare practitioner, and two student delegates, will evaluate current systems, emergency response mechanisms, specialist referral processes, and oversight methods, subsequently proposing evidence-based refinements.

IIT Delhi leadership has stated that the overarching vision is to cultivate a campus atmosphere defined by empathy, transparency, and unwavering student advocacy. The administration maintains that these measures transcend routine policy tweaks, representing a steadfast commitment to centering student welfare and perpetually upgrading institutional standards.
