The condition arises from multiple overlapping vulnerabilities: physiological issues like prematurity or prenatal tobacco exposure, social barriers including inadequate support systems, and hazardous sleep setups featuring soft bedding or stomach sleeping. The majority of cases happen in infants under six months, though precautions should continue through the first year. Health authorities recommend the ABC approach to safe sleep: Alone, Back, Crib. Babies should sleep by themselves in a bare, firm bassinet or crib placed close to parents but not in the same bed.
