How H1N1 differs from COVID‑19 and treatment options

Both H1N1 influenza and COVID‑19 attack the respiratory system and share symptoms such as fever, cough and fatigue, but they belong to different viral families and have distinct clinical patterns. COVID‑19 has shown a higher incidence of cardiac and neurological complications, whereas influenza rarely causes such extra‑pulmonary effects. The primary antiviral for H1N1 is oseltamivir, which works best when started within 48 hours of symptom onset. This medication is specific to influenza viruses and does not affect SARS‑CoV‑2. Because oseltamivir is prescription‑only, patients should obtain it under a doctor's guidance. In contrast, COVID‑19 treatment protocols involve a broader range of antivirals, steroids and supportive care. Early diagnosis, appropriate antiviral therapy for H1N1 and vaccination remain key to limiting severe outcomes.
