History and Hurdles: Kerala’s Decade‑Long AIIMS Quest
Kerala – For more than ten years, the state has been lobbying for an All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a flagship health project that promises world‑class education and patient care. The initiative began under the Oommen Chandy ministry in 2014, when the central government identified four potential locations across the state.
Subsequent discussions saw the centre urging Kerala to finalize a site, but the allocation of AIIMS to other states delayed the project. The demand resurfaced each year during the pre‑budget session, with the state hoping to secure a place in the central health plan.
The latest twist involves a public dispute between Union Minister Suresh Gopi and State Health Minister K. Muraleedharan. While Gopi pushes for Trissur, citing its calm environment and economic viability, Muraleedharan points to alternatives such as Alappuzha and a plot in Kottayam.
Both leaders are leveraging the issue to bolster their political standing ahead of the 2024 polls, turning a health infrastructure demand into a high‑stakes political contest.
The outcome will determine not only the future of medical education in Kerala but also the political capital each minister can claim.
