The death of a pregnant woman and her newborn in the Guraz area of Bandipora district has cast a spotlight on the difficulties faced by health workers in Jammu and Kashmir’s rugged border zones. The woman, suffering from a high‑risk pregnancy with a hemoglobin level of merely five, was taken to a local health centre before being referred to the sub‑district hospital. Severe snowfall near the Rajasdan Pass made the journey to the district hospital in Bandipora exceedingly slow, contributing to the tragic outcome. After reviewing the case, the deputy commissioner directed that the matter be escalated to the health services director for decisive action against the physician involved. The administration also pledged to improve winter emergency response plans to ensure faster transport for vulnerable patients.
